Rupert Murdoch: The 21st Century is Australia's for the Taking - Culture and Society - Browse - Big Ideas - ABC TV

Rupert Murdoch wears a Jawbone. For those of you who don’t wear one, it’s a bracelet that you attach to your person and it keeps intimate track of your eating habits, sleeping patterns and general mobility, apparently encouraging more personal and social responsibility. This is possibly an irrelevant bit of trivia about the biggest media mogul in the west; but you’ll have picked up this Jawbone stuff, if you follow his tweets. Murdoch was in Sydney recently to deliver the tenth anniversary Lowy Institute lecture. In it he made the bold pronouncement that the ‘21st century is Australia’s for the taking’ and we should drop our angst about where we rank in global importance, because, "we’re on the cusp of becoming something rare and valuable in this new world”. Such extraordinary optimism. Bold new world stuff. These sentiments were entirely absent in the lead up to the last federal election where the entire Murdoch press had the country on the cusp of disaster – heading down the economic gurgler. Murdoch pulled a very big crowd at the Sydney Town Hall for the Lowy lecture; pretty well everyone who’s anyone in politics and business popped on a black tie and took a seat for this occasion. And if you’re interested in broadening your knowledge on Rupert Murdoch, Paul Barry’s latest mogul book, Sex, Lies and the Murdoch Succession is a terrific read. http://www.abc.net.au/tv/bigideas/stories/2013/11/25/3890739.htm
