Podcast 326: Visionist

Podcast 326: Visionist 01/14/2014 Shawn Reynaldo It was early 2012 when XLR8R first profiled Visionist (a.k.a. Louis Carnell) in our ongoing Bubblin' Up series, and even then, the London-based producer seemed like an incredibly busy guy. Over the past two years or so, he basically hasn't stopped working; the latter half of 2013 proved to be a particularly fruitful period, as Visionist records popped up on Leisure System, RAMP, and Lit City Trax, solidifying the young producer's position as one of the leading figures in the resurgent grime scene. http://www.xlr8r.com/podcast/2014/01/visionist

The Best of Everything — Chloe Weil

What kind of year has it been? This is not a Best of 2013 list; it’s just that this year was different. I don’t listen to a lot of contemporary music because everything was better last century, and since music is not social for me, there’s nothing to keep me current. I listened to a lot of college radio this year, and through it I discovered a lot of new music and new-to-me music. Crucially, I was able to support many of them on Bandcamp, and now I’m addicted to Bandcamp like people are addicted to Kickstarter. I’m just sharing these, and not trying to convince you that they’re the best because this is not that. So instead of reminding you again for the nth time this December that The National released an album this year that is a great name for a racehorse, I’m going to anachronistically mention that I heard some songs on the radio so I made a mixtape and, like, support your local scene. http://chloeweil.com/blog/the-best-of-everything

xlr8r Podcast 200: Mala

The second half of our two-part 200th podcast comes courtesy of another musical heavyweight, dubstep kingpin Mala (a.k.a. Mark Lawrence). Whether operating solo or as one half of legendary outfit Digital Mystikz, the man helped put dubstep on the musical map in the mid-'00s, not only as a producer and DJ, but also as the co-founder of the genre-defining DMZ label and club night with Coki and Loefah. Along the way, he also found the time to start up his own Deep Medi imprint. His work has undeniably influenced an entire generation of bass-loving artists, including a large swath of those folks who regularly appear in XLR8R. These days, when he's not travelling the globe and reminding people of the power of sub-bass, he's still turning out new music—most recently last year's Return II Space album—and now he's kicking off a new mix series, Sound*System*Musik, the first chapter of which is this podcast for XLR8R. Over the course of its 45 minutes, Mala drops one low-slung, speaker-rattling tune after the next, many of them DMZ dubplates, and almost all of which seriously emphasize the dub end of the dubstep equation. He's a true master craftsman, someone who manipulates and massages low-end sonics with the precision of a surgeon, making his contribution to the XLR8R podcast series to true pleasure to behold. 01 Mala - Digital Mystikz "Livin' Different VIP" (DMZ) 02 V.I.V.E.K "Feel It" (Deep Medi) 03 Goth-Trad "Seeker" 04 Coki - Digital Mystikz "Ironshirt" 05 Mala "Enter Dimensions" 06 Kryptic Minds + Youngsta "Arcane" 07 Dark Tantrums "Unborn" 08 V.I.V.E.K "Big Bang" (Deep Medi) 09 Mavado "Dem A Talk (TMSV Refix)" 10 Coki "Revolution" 11 Jack Sparrow "Afraid of Me" 12 Mensah "Gambia" 13 The Dub Mechanics "The Clash" 14 Mala "Bad Spirits on Shoulders" 15 Digital Mystikz "Dun Stinky" 16 Commodo "Saracen" (Deep Medi) 17 Coki "Duppy Sour Sap" 18 Johnny Osbourne "Fally Rankin (V.I.V.E.K. Dub Version)" (Greensleeves) 19 Mala "Education" (DMZ) 20 Old Apparatus "Untitled Intro" (Deep Medi)

Mike Skinner’s FACT Mix

Soon after retiring his The Streets moniker this year, Mike Skinner formed a group with former Music frontman Robert Harvey called The DOT, where Harvey would sing and Skinner would produce. Though not moving totally out of the spotlight, one of history’s most weirdly confessional rapper/musical talkers seems to be receding a bit from the microphone. Here he heads—again without uttering a word—from the studio to the DJ booth, recording a super enjoyable, hour-long house-centric mix for FACT featuring star turns from Maya Jane Coles, an insane remix of Al Stewart’s “Year of the Cat,” some Streets edits and surprise dabbles into chainsaw dubstep. Air France FACT mix

FACT mix 280 takes the form of a rare session from elusive Swedish duo Air France. Rare, in fact, is an understatement when it comes to these two: transmissions from Joel Karlsson and Henrik Markstedt have been notably thin on the ground since their 2006 debut, On Trade Winds. The pair have only released two physical records to date, following said debut EP with 2008′s six-track No Way Down (both were originally released through Swedish label Sincerely Yours, but later were packaged together and reissued by Rough Trade). Sample-based records that lingered like the faded afterthoughts of Balearic summers, they represent two of the most distinctive EPs of the last decade, predicting the waves of chillwave and hypnagogic pop music that would follow them while never being bettered. Since then, there’s been two digital singles, 2009′s ‘GBG Belongs to Us’ and ‘It Feels Good to Be Around You’, a stunning drum machine-driven ballad released last month. Air France’s debut album, beyond long-awaited at this point, is roughly scheduled for a release this year, but whether it’ll actually materalise or not is anybody’s guess. That’s half the fun with these guys. What we do know is that we’ve persuaded them to contribute a mix to our series. In the words of the group, “it’s September soon, and it may be audiable in the mix. It’s a beautiful month, but also a month of changes, both good and bad, you know?”. Clams Casino, Holy Other and at least one unheard Air France track feature in a mix that picks out the perfect middle ground between dance music and pop.

Jamie xx FACT mix

This Monday’s FACT mix takes the form of a haunting, late night garage session from a certain Jamie Smith. You’re presumably already familiar with Smith by now: percussionist and producer in Mercury Prize-winning three-piece the xx and a solo producer in his own right, this year remixing Gil Scott-Heron’s I’m New Here over the course of a full album and releasing one of 2011′s most debated singles in ‘Far Nearer’, released on Numbers. He also remixed Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ to arresting effect. This, technically, isn’t the first time he’s contributed a FACT mix: in 2009, the xx as a group were behind one of our all-time most popular sessions, and FACT mix 239 was a Boiler Room-assisted recording of Jamie and Oneman’s back-to-back set from our joint party at XOYO with Young Turks. But this mix marks his first solo appearance in our series. On Thursday, September 22, Jamie xx will team up with veteran visual artist Quayola to perform Structures, a collaborative audio-visual show at Shoreditch Car Club, using Quayola’s custom-built Partitura to bring Jamie’s music – including material from a new solo EP, apparently – to life. The show was originally scheduled for last month, but had to be postponed due to the London riots; to win tickets, visit our competition, and to watch a 90-second teaser video of what’s in store, head over to Rizlab, who have organised the show. Alternatively, just download Jamie’s FACT mix, a dusk-lit garage and house session featuring Elgato, Dark Sky and a bunch of stuff we’ve never heard before, though alternate versions of a couple of well-known Jamie xx remixes appear to be present. Naturally, there’s no tracklist supplied.
